Art Classes

“Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.”

–Pablo Picasso

Art classes here are rooted in classical technique, fundamental skill development, and art theory, with an eye ever toward developing a personal artistic voice and quality portfolio of work as student’s skills progress.  Students will be learning skills and process directly from a professional artist with real-world, proven experience in teaching fine art techniques, gallery exhibitions, and both public and private artwork commissions. Classes are ongoing and structured academy-style, with students developing skillsets that build upon each other as they learn and progress to more advanced projects and media over time.

Program

Students will begin by developing a solid foundation in Drawing, working from both photo references and real-life with a focus on realism, form, and value.  Students will complete exercises in both graphite and charcoal, and they will also complete at least 6 individual projects at their own pace, including some Free Choice projects with a greater emphasis on creativity and style.

Once students have solidified drawing skills and have demonstrated a fundamental understanding of form and value, they will progress to learning about Color and color theory, adding chalk pastel and colored pencil (optional) to their media repertoire.  Working in color is a huge skillset jump from black & white/greyscale work, and through my many years of teaching I have found working in pastel and/or colored pencil to be a fantastic bridge between drawing and painting.  Again, students will be expected to complete more intermediate exercises and another 6 individual projects in “dry” color media before advancing on to painting.

Advanced students who have completed the necessary Drawing & Color Foundations will be invited to explore a variety of Paint media, including watercolor, acrylic, and oil painting.  Student and instructor will work together to decide which medium student would like to focus in.  Once student has completed the necessary exercises/skill development in their desired paint medium, student and teacher will work closely together to choose individual projects that will advance the student’s technical abilities in addition to broadening their creative scope and artistic voice, including the possibility of a mixed-media approach.  Students may choose to learn all paint modalities as they are interested but will be expected to complete the necessary exercises and at least 6 individual projects in each medium before moving on to the next.  Artistic practice at this level is custom-tailored to the individual student’s continuing skill advancement and interests.  Students will complete a variety of portfolio-quality artworks with the option of working toward professional-level advancement.

Throughout their studio courses, students will also be strongly encouraged to maintain a personal sketchbook and will be given optional weekly sketchbook prompts.  These are meant to be a fun and engaging way to continue skill development outside of class hours and explore more personal art interests such anime/manga, illustration, more stylized work, or additional media exploration.  Sketchbook review/critique with instructor will be made available to students, as desired.

Studio Policies

  • Class size is limited to a maximum of 8 students per class to ensure that each student gets one-on-one attention, quality instruction, and adequate working space.
  • Enrollment is ongoing and tuition is due at the beginning of every 4 weeks [a $10 late fee will be assessed for tuition that is more than 10 days late].
  • If you miss a class due to absence/illness, you may make it up on an alternate class day/time as space is available. Make-up classes are void after 3 months.
  • Class cancellation by instructor will roll your 4-week session forward [i.e. it’s not a “makeup;” your paid classes just get bumped out by a session].
  • Please notify instructor ASAP if you know you will be absent OR if you wish to unenroll; no refunds will be given for classes that have already been paid for.  Students who wish to unenroll for any reason will forfeit any unused classes at the end of the last 4-week period that they have paid for, including any unused makeup classes.
  • Students are responsible for furnishing their own art supplies and are expected to show up to class prepared each week.
  • Please note that students who are chronically absent AND/OR late to pay tuition without pre-arrangement with instructor may forfeit their “spot” in class at instructor’s discretion, especially (but not limited to) if there is a waitlist.

Remember, art is creative PRACTICE and the continued development of a SKILLSET—just like you spend time practicing an instrument or training for a sport, you must put in the “studio hours” if you really want to see your abilities progress!  Once you put in the effort to climb the mountain, you will be rewarded with a vast and beautiful vista of creative possibilities!!
